Library turns weekend into learning and play

Families have a busy morning ahead at the New Lenox Public Library, where “Community Helper Day” runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Kids can meet firefighters, police officers, and other helpers, hear about what they do, and take part in crafts tied to different jobs. The event is free but held in the Storytime Room, so space is limited.

Library staff also wrapped up an after-hours Teen Valentine’s Day Lock-In on Friday evening, giving teens a low-cost, chaperoned way to hang out, watch movies, and play games after the building closed. Taken together, the youth programs show the library leaning into both fun and career exploration as winter weather keeps people indoors.

Creamery hosts Hearts & Crafts this afternoon

If you are looking for a sweet outing later today, the Creamery on Timber Place is hosting a Hearts & Crafts session from 1 to 3 p.m. Children can decorate wooden Valentine picture frames while enjoying ice cream, with one frame included per reserved ticket alongside any purchase. Organizers are asking families to reserve spots in advance, since seating and supplies are limited.

Brews, bands, and pinball on tap

Hickory Creek Brewing Company is turning into an all-day hangout. A pinball tournament is scheduled to start at noon, followed by live music from singer-songwriter Jack Byron at 6:30 p.m. Both events are scheduled at the brewery’s Schoolhouse Road location, giving adults multiple excuses to get out of the house before the big football game on Sunday.

Over at VFW Post 9545, the Wind Gypsys are slated to play in the bar tonight at 7 p.m. The show is open to the public ages 21 and over, with no cover, as the post continues to use weekend entertainment to draw both veterans and neighbors through the doors.

Quick look ahead

After a busy weekend, the village shifts back into civic mode with a Village Board meeting Monday night, February 9, at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Village Hall. Residents interested in development, public safety, or upcoming projects can review the agenda online before the meeting and attend in person to stay plugged in.
