Good morning, Bridgeton. Here is a quick look at what is happening in and around the city today.

Library launches Black History Month film series

The Bridgeton Free Public Library is marking the 100th anniversary of Black History Month with a new film series exploring the African American experience. The series opens today with a screening of the epic biographical film “Malcolm X,” inviting residents to reflect on the civil rights leader’s life and legacy.

Later this month, the library will host additional Thursday evening screenings, including powerful historical dramas that look at organizing, resistance and the struggle for justice. All showings are free and open to the public, offering a chance for neighbors to gather, learn and discuss together.

City Council sets 2026 meeting schedule

City Hall has released the full 2026 calendar for Bridgeton City Council meetings. After the first February session held on February 3, council will meet again on February 17, with additional meetings scheduled on the first and third Tuesdays through May and single meetings in the summer months.

The schedule is meant to give residents plenty of notice so they can follow local decisions on public safety, development, taxes and other issues. Agendas and minutes are posted through the city website, and residents can attend in person or follow updates afterward.

County and local boards prepare for a busy week

Cumberland County is gearing up for a full slate of public meetings next week, including a Tourism Advisory Council session and a regular meeting of the county commissioners on February 10. Additional gatherings of the emergency assistance, library and veterans commissions are planned for February 11.

Closer to home, Hopewell Township has scheduled a February 12 hearing at its Shiloh Pike municipal building, which carries a Bridgeton mailing address, to consider changes to land use board administrative and escrow fees. The proposed ordinance would update the fee schedule that applies to development applications, something that can affect project costs and timelines for property owners and builders.

Meanwhile, the state Urban Enterprise Zone Authority has announced its next board meeting for February 11. Because Bridgeton is part of New Jersey’s enterprise zone program, local business owners who rely on zone incentives and loans will want to watch for updates coming out of that session.
