Federal charge filed in Balch Springs bank shooting

Federal prosecutors have filed a robbery charge against a man accused of shooting an armored truck guard outside a bank on Lake June Road. A federal complaint alleges the suspect tried to rob the guard while he serviced an ATM, then fired several shots and ran through a nearby fence line.

Officials say the guard was taken to the hospital in critical condition after the Wednesday morning attack but has since been described as responsive, able to give a thumbs-up to medical staff. The charge carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years if there is a conviction.

Arrest ends manhunt, but investigation continues

Local police and federal agents say they tracked the suspect using video that appeared to show a masked man dressed in black fleeing the bank area and getting into a car. Working with agencies in the region, investigators later located the vehicle and arrested the suspect at an apartment in another city.

Authorities emphasize there is no ongoing threat to the public, though detectives are still reviewing evidence, including surveillance footage and camera video from the guard. More details on the case are expected to become public as it moves through the federal courts.

Hickory Tree Road reconstruction meeting set

The city is inviting residents to learn about a major reconstruction of Hickory Tree Road from Lake June Road to Elam Road. Plans call for rebuilding about a mile of roadway and adding shared-use paths and sidewalks to improve safety for people walking and biking.

A virtual presentation and in-person open house are scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, February 17, at the Balch Springs Civic Center. City staff and consultants will be on hand to explain design options and accept written comments, which will be taken through early March.

Election filing window enters its final week

Balch Springs is also preparing for the May 2 city election, which will fill Places 2, 4 and 6 on the council. Residents interested in running must file their paperwork by late afternoon on Friday, February 13. Voters have until April 2 to get registered if they plan to participate in the spring election.
