Police investigate Thursday homicide

New Iberia Police are investigating a deadly incident from Thursday afternoon at a home near Corrine and Robinson streets. Officers say the case is being treated as a homicide, and additional details about the victim or any suspects have not yet been released. Residents in the neighborhood can expect an increased police presence as detectives continue to interview witnesses and collect evidence.

Storm flooding leaves Vicnaire Street homes damaged

Neighbors on Vicnaire Street are still drying out after heavy rain on Thursday pushed water into several houses. Residents report that while the street often floods, this week’s storm was different because drivers continued to plow through high water, sending wakes into homes and soaking bedrooms, living rooms, and sheetrock.

Floodwaters reportedly reached mid-calf to knee level in the street before slowly draining. Homeowners tried to use their own trucks to block traffic and protect property. City officials have an ordinance on the books that makes creating wakes in floodwater a misdemeanor, and neighbors are urging drivers to turn around during future storms instead of trying to push through.

Industrial trades career fair coming to city park

On the jobs front, an industrial trades career fair is set for March 18 at the New Iberia City Park Recreation Center. The event, organized with regional economic and workforce partners, is expected to feature more than 35 hiring companies.

The fair will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., giving job seekers a chance to speak directly with employers about openings in construction, manufacturing, energy, and related fields. Organizers say attendees should bring updated résumés and be prepared for on-the-spot conversations about hiring timelines and training requirements.

Mardi Gras parade impacts nearby Jeanerette

Today in Jeanerette, the Krewe of Ezana Mardi Gras parade will bring midday road closures along the Main Street corridor. Lineup begins at noon, with the parade rolling at 1 p.m. and ending at Burleigh Park.

Police plan to close Main Street intersections at 11:30 a.m. and will enforce no-parking zones on several nearby streets. Glass containers, weapons, backpacks, ski masks, and horses are among the items that will not be allowed along the route. Families heading over from New Iberia are encouraged to arrive early, respect barricades, and keep children with a parent or guardian at all times.
