A busy start to the weekend in Edwardsville includes a significant house fire, a statement win for the Tigers, springlike temperatures, and a kid-focused library program.

Crews knock down Friday house fire

Firefighters from multiple departments responded Friday morning to a blaze on the 7100 block of Barton Mills Court on the city’s north side. The fire began in the home’s garage and had fully engulfed that area by the time crews arrived.

Teams were able to keep the flames from destroying the main living space, but the garage was lost and the house took on heavy smoke and water damage. The residents, who were home at the time, got out safely after calling 911 and will be displaced while repairs are made. No injuries were reported as investigators work to confirm the cause.

Tigers avenge earlier loss to Alton

Edwardsville High School’s boys basketball team turned the tables on Alton on Friday night, grinding out a 43–31 road win after a lopsided defeat in December. The Tigers leaned on defense, holding Alton to just 15 points over the final 25 minutes.

Guard Miccah Butler led the way with 17 points, including a strong fourth quarter, while teammate Rowan Weller added double figures as well. The victory is the Tigers’ third straight and keeps them in the hunt near the top of the Southwestern Conference heading into the stretch run of the regular season.

Cold snap eases with a weekend warmup

After roughly a week and a half of below-freezing highs, Edwardsville is finally thawing out. Local forecasters expect temperatures to climb into the 50s by Sunday and possibly reach the 60s early next week, running well above normal for early February.

The warmer pattern should make it easier to get outside over the next few days, though residents are still being encouraged to watch for slick spots overnight as remaining snow and ice melt and refreeze.

Today at the public library

Families looking for something low-key this morning have a free option downtown. The public library is hosting its regular tutoring session with Edwardsville High School students from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the youth area.

The drop-in program offers homework help and study support for elementary and middle school students, with no registration required. It is one of several kid-focused events the library has scheduled throughout February.
