Court cases draw attention

Two major public safety cases are moving ahead in Douglas County this week, keeping attention on impaired driving and a December incident that shook a local school community.

Prosecutors say a 48-year-old Superior woman with five prior impaired-driving convictions was stopped in late January after allegedly driving without headlights and showing signs of drug use. She now faces a sixth-offense operating-while-under-the-influence charge and has been ordered to appear for arraignment in early March, with cash bond set while the case proceeds.

In a separate case, a 28-year-old man accused of firing at police officers and then crashing a van into Superior Middle School on December 7 has been found competent to stand trial. A psychologist’s report concluded he can understand the proceedings and assist in his defense. He waived a preliminary hearing this week, and an arraignment is scheduled for late March as he remains jailed on a high cash bond.

Downtown business update

Downtown is seeing fresh energy from a new shake shop on Tower Avenue. Simply Superior Nutrition has opened at 1017 Tower, bringing back a menu of meal-replacement shakes, energy teas and protein coffee in the former nutrition-club space. The locally owned shop held its soft opening earlier this week and is planning a grand-opening promotion this weekend with special flavors and giveaways.

The owners, a local couple with long ties in the community, say they hope to serve workers from nearby offices as well as residents looking for a quick breakfast or lunchtime stop. Their opening adds to a string of small-business activity in the core business district, including creative retail spaces and workshops aimed at drawing more people downtown.

Snow, slick spots and deep winter cold

Light snow and patchy slick spots are expected to linger around the Twin Ports region as a weak system slides through, followed by a sharper cooldown heading into Sunday. Forecasts point to highs falling back into the teens and overnight lows in the single digits, with wind chills dipping below zero at times.

As of mid-morning today, temperatures in the Superior area were hovering in the low single digits, feeling several degrees colder with the wind. Skies are expected to trend mostly cloudy, with highs near the upper teens and a small chance of flurries tonight before another cold, dry day on Sunday.

If you are traveling, give yourself extra time on side streets and neighborhood hills, and watch for refreezing on sidewalks after today’s light snow and traffic.
