Winter Bird Festival takes flight today

Galt’s biggest nature event of the year is underway today at McCaffrey Middle School, as the 19th Annual Winter Bird Festival runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with free admission for all ages.

The festival highlights Galt’s spot along the Pacific Flyway, offering guided bird walks, educational workshops, kids’ activities, local vendors and food trucks, all focused on the birds and wildlife that call the Delta home.

• 9 a.m.: Bat presentation with tips on safely welcoming these night flyers
• 10 a.m.: Live raptors, including hawks and owls, with a close-up look at their role in local ecosystems
• 11 a.m.: Wildlife ambassadors that cannot return to the wild, paired with a conservation message
• 12 p.m.: Falconry demonstration featuring several birds of prey in flight

Families are encouraged to bundle up, bring binoculars if they have them, and plan extra time to browse the vendor and education expo highlighting conservation groups and nature-themed businesses.

City schedule: Holiday closure and council meeting

Looking ahead, City Hall is preparing for the Presidents Day holiday on Monday, February 16, when most city offices will be closed. Essential public safety services will remain in operation.

The next regular City Council meeting is set for Tuesday, February 17 at 6 p.m. in the council chambers on Civic Drive. Residents can expect updates on ongoing growth, local infrastructure and community programs, with agenda materials posted in advance on the city website.

Later in the month, the Commission on Aging is scheduled to meet on February 26, continuing its work on resources and programming for older adults in the community.

Today’s weather: Foggy start, mild afternoon

Galt woke up to chilly sunshine in the mid-30s, with fog expected to thicken through late morning before giving way to partial sun.

By midafternoon, temperatures are forecast to reach the mid-60s, making for comfortable conditions outside for festivalgoers and anyone running errands or enjoying local parks around town.
