Pickerington Daily Brief: Zoning Hearings, School Changes, February Events

Township zoning hearings and local job opening

Violet Township leaders are preparing for two key land-use hearings this month. The Zoning Commission will continue a public hearing on February 17 for a proposed rezoning of about 60 acres along Blacklick‑Eastern Road to allow a 142‑unit condominium development. A separate Board of Zoning Appeals hearing is set for February 19 to consider a homeowner’s request for variances on an addition along Capetown Avenue.

The township is also hiring. A full‑time road maintenance worker position is open through February 13, with the new hire to help care for township roads, snow response and basic infrastructure work.

Students and families should also note that the Violet Township Women’s League is again offering four $2,500 scholarships for graduating seniors who live in Violet Township or the Pickerington city limits. Applications are due March 14.

School changes: academy closure and new junior high

Pickerington Local Schools is moving ahead with a major program change this summer. The district’s Pickerington Academy, a virtual and flexible option for grades 7–12, will close in July 2026, with its roughly 40 current students transitioning back to their home high schools for the 2026–27 school year. District leaders say the move will free up money to support free, all‑day universal kindergarten while still providing individualized help for students in traditional buildings.

At the same time, the district is getting ready to open Pickerington Central Junior High School, a new 143,000‑square‑foot campus on Lockville Road. The building will welcome students on February 23 and is designed with flexible learning areas, collaborative classrooms and modern technology to keep pace with enrollment growth.

Before classes begin, the district plans a community ribbon cutting on February 18 at 2:30 p.m., followed by a public open house on February 19 in the evening so families can tour the new space.

February events, no‑school days and city reminders

A regional community calendar highlights several mid‑month outings close to home, including the Pickerington Village Shop Hop on February 12, Valentine card‑making workshops at the Sycamore Branch library on February 13, and a Valentine’s luminary walk the evening of February 14.

Families should also mark their calendars for no‑school days on February 16 through 18 for President’s Day and professional development, plus a series of Friday fish fries beginning February 20 and running into late March. Toward the end of the month, the Pick Ohio Beer Festival and a winter birding class will bring more activity to local parks and venues.

With winter weather still in the forecast, the City of Pickerington is reminding residents that its snow removal crews prioritize main roads before shifting into neighborhoods, and encourages drivers to leave extra space for plows on narrow streets and cul‑de‑sacs.
