Student protest in Fernley stays peaceful

Lyon County deputies report that Friday’s coordinated student walkout in Fernley remained peaceful, despite a wave of rumors about possible violence ahead of the event. Students from Fernley High School and Silverland Middle School marched from their campuses to the roundabout at Main Street and the highway late Friday morning.

Deputies say around 70 students took part, along with a small group of counter-protesters. Extra law enforcement was staged around the city and along the route. Officials say they investigated multiple reports of potential fights or weapons before the walkout, but found no credible threats. Traffic near the roundabout was slowed for a time, but no arrests or injuries were reported.

Mayor preparing 2026 State of the City address

City leaders are inviting residents to the 2026 State of the City address later this month. Mayor Neal McIntyre plans to highlight major projects from the past year and outline growth, infrastructure and public safety priorities for the year ahead.

The address is scheduled for the evening of February 26 at the Community Response and Resource Center on East Main Street. Doors will open an hour before the speech for light refreshments and time to visit with neighbors and city staff. Seating is limited, and residents are being asked to RSVP by phone or email.

Library and school events around town today

The Fernley branch library is leaning into family activities this weekend, with table tennis in the morning and a Bring Your Child to the Library Day event running through the afternoon. Staff are encouraging families to stop in, explore new books and make use of the games and learning spaces.

On the school side, Fernley High School has a busy home sports slate this weekend, with multiple basketball games against Dayton and a wrestling trip to Churchill County on the schedule. Families are encouraged to check school calendars for exact times and any last minute changes.

Looking ahead

City and community calendars show a full February, from planning meetings for the Fourth of July celebration to board games and youth coding clubs at the library later in the month.
