Coastal high surf advisory continues

A high surf advisory remains in effect along the Orange County coast, including Seal Beach, through early Sunday morning. Forecasters expect breaking waves in the four to seven foot range on west-facing beaches, combined with higher than normal tides. That can mean minor flooding on low-lying beachfront areas and stronger rip currents than usual.

Local officials urge visitors to stay extra cautious near the water, keep off jetties and rock structures, and avoid swimming if you are inexperienced. If you are heading to the pier or the sand today, it is a good idea to keep an eye on the tide and watch for posted warnings.

Youth hoops at AIM Sports Facility

The annual SuperBowl Shootout youth basketball tournament is in town today at the AIM Sports Facility on Apollo Court. Dozens of boys and girls travel teams from second through eighth grade are scheduled to play, with multiple competition levels and at least two games guaranteed for each team.

The event typically draws families from around Southern California, so expect extra traffic and parking demand near the business park during game times.

Live music fills Seal Beach venues

It is a busy music weekend locally. On Friday night, The Highwayman Show brought classic outlaw country sounds to Spaghettini on Old Ranch Parkway, giving diners a close-up concert experience in the jazz lounge setting.

Tonight, singer-songwriter Steve Forbert is set to perform at the Bay Theatre in Old Town, adding a main-street concert option for residents who want to stay close to home.

Looking ahead this month

Environmental volunteers are already planning for the next monthly beach cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, February 21, at the beach parking lot at the end of First Street. Organizers provide gloves, bags, pickers and parking permits, and can sign community service forms for students.
