It is a busy winter Saturday around town, with events on the ice, students in the spotlight and Bears fans watching the sports calendar.

Bear’ly Open brings golf to the ice

The frozen surface of White Bear Lake turns into a golf course today for the annual BEAR’ly Open Golf on Ice fundraiser near Ramsey Beach. Groups play two short courses using homemade “clubs” like hockey sticks, brooms and shovels, with prizes for creative costumes and sleds.

The event raises money for the White Bear Area Food Shelf and has grown into a midwinter tradition. A heated tent area offers food and drinks from local businesses, making it a gathering spot even for non-golfers.

Also on the lake today, a Horseshoes on Ice tournament outside the Lake Avenue VFW gives residents another way to enjoy the cold while supporting local veterans’ programs.

Community calendar

Looking ahead, the White Bear Lake Winter Farmers Market will host its final winter session at the high school, with dozens of local food vendors and free hot apple cider for shoppers.

On February 13, the Bear Legacy breakfast returns to the high school student union as a fundraiser for the White Bear Lake Area Educational Foundation. The morning event is free to attend with advance registration, and donations help fund classroom grants and student programs.

Students in the spotlight

White Bear Lake Area High School musicians filled the stage Friday at the 44th annual Jazz Night Club event, showcasing student ensembles that have been rehearsing classic jazz charts for weeks.

On the slopes, two boys and one girls alpine skier from the high school qualified for the state tournament after strong results at the Section 7 meet at Giants Ridge, sending the Bears back to state later this month.

Bears hockey looks to bounce back

The boys hockey team is aiming to rebound tonight after a 6–2 loss to Cretin-Derham Hall on Thursday at TCO Sports Garden. White Bear Lake struck first with an early goal, but the Raiders answered quickly and pulled away with a strong second period led by forward Jonny Bloedow.

The Bears return to home ice this evening to face the Cadets in a key late-season matchup as they tune up for section play.

At City Hall

The next White Bear Lake City Council meeting is set for Tuesday, February 10, at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, with additional council sessions and commission meetings scheduled through late February.
