Snow parking ban and tricky travel

A citywide emergency snow parking ban is in effect across Portsmouth starting at 1 a.m. Saturday, February 7, as plow crews work to keep streets clear during the latest winter storm. Drivers are being urged to move cars off the street ahead of the ban and to use designated city lots where overnight parking is allowed. Towing and ticketing are expected to be enforced so that narrow neighborhood roads and downtown blocks can be fully treated.

The ban comes as forecasters call for several inches of snow and fast changing road conditions along the Seacoast. Light snow is expected to taper off later in the day, but the combination of fresh accumulation, gusty winds and dropping temperatures will likely make sidewalks and secondary roads slippery into Saturday night.

Arctic chill follows today’s snowfall

Behind the storm, an arctic air mass is expected to move in, pushing wind chills into dangerous territory late Saturday and especially on Sunday. Forecasts call for actual air temperatures to plunge well below freezing, with winds along the coast creating even harsher conditions for anyone spending long periods of time outdoors.

Early snowfall reports from around New Hampshire showed only a light coating near Portsmouth by late morning, but meteorologists warn that localized heavier bands near the shoreline could still develop. Residents are being advised to keep an eye on updated forecasts, give plow trucks plenty of room and watch for rapidly changing visibility on the highways.

Valentine events still on in the city

Despite the wintry weather, Portsmouth’s recreation staff expect families to turn out for the annual Be My Valentine Dance at the Community Campus gym on Saturday evening. The long-running event invites parents, grandparents and kids to dress up, walk the red carpet, take photos and dance to a mix of pop favorites and classic group songs.

Downtown, the community “Tree of Love” tradition continues in Market Square, where residents are invited to drop off handmade valentines that will be hung on a downtown tree in the coming days. The display is set to brighten the city center through mid February, offering a colorful counterpoint to the gray snowbanks.

Live music at The Press Room

For those willing to bundle up and head out after the storm, The Press Room on Daniel Street is hosting a Weezer “Blue Album” tribute show on Saturday night. Local band Recent History is scheduled to play the album front to back, along with other fan favorites, in a late show geared toward grown up Weezer fans looking for a bit of nostalgia.

Organizers recommend giving yourself extra time to park safely and walk to the venue, as snowbanks and icy sidewalks could make the usual downtown routes a little slower than normal.
