Shafter Daily Brief: Fog, School Delays and Market Notes

Dense fog advisory and weekend weather

A dense fog advisory remains in effect for the Delano–Wasco–Shafter stretch from late Friday night through midmorning Saturday, with visibility at times down to a quarter mile or less. Drivers heading out early were urged to slow down, use headlights and give themselves extra time.

Once the fog clears, today should be mild, with highs in the mid 60s to near 70 around Shafter. Forecasts point to cooler 50s and increasing chances of valley rain early next week.

Fog pushes school start times later

Thursday’s thick fog forced a long list of Kern County schools onto delayed start schedules, including campuses that serve Shafter students. Shafter High School, Richland School District sites in town, General Shafter School District and Grow Public Schools in Arvin and Shafter all reported roughly two hour delays.

The adjustments gave buses and families extra time to travel safely. With more fog in the forecast, local districts are asking families to keep an eye on early morning texts, calls and social media posts before heading out the door.

Air quality checks in as “moderate”

Real‑time monitors showed Shafter’s air quality in the “moderate” range for much of Friday, briefly improving to “good” before slipping back. That level is generally acceptable for most people, but those with asthma or heart and lung conditions may want to take it easy outdoors during the haziest periods.

Market watch: New listings in town

Shafter’s housing and industrial markets also saw movement headed into the weekend. An industrial parcel on South Beech Avenue, just under an acre inside the city’s industrial area, was updated Friday as an active listing, and a three bedroom, two bath Atlantic Avenue home near local schools also showed a fresh status update.
