School illnesses keep some students home

Several Klamath County schools were closed Friday, February 6, because of high levels of staff illness and a shortage of substitutes. The affected campuses included Peterson, Shasta and Ferguson elementary schools in Klamath Falls, along with Chiloquin Elementary and Chiloquin Junior/Senior High. All after school programs and activities at those sites were also canceled.

Health officials say the closures are meant to give sick students and staff time to recover and to allow a deep cleaning of classrooms and common areas. Families are being urged to watch for symptoms of stomach flu and other respiratory bugs, keep sick children home, and focus on basics like handwashing and disinfecting shared surfaces.

Weekend weather: Mild today, wetter by Sunday

Today’s forecast for the Klamath Basin calls for mostly cloudy skies with highs in the lower to mid 50s and a slight chance of light showers this afternoon. Tonight stays mostly cloudy with a better chance of rain, especially after midnight, as moisture moves into southern Oregon.

On Sunday, rain becomes more likely across the region, with snow levels staying high in the mountains for much of the day before dropping Sunday night. Breezy south winds could gust into the 30 mile per hour range at times, so drivers heading over the passes should be prepared for changing conditions late in the weekend.

For those staying in town today, a local card show is scheduled from late morning into the evening at a Washburn Way business, offering trading cards, collectibles and a casual hangout spot for hobbyists. Friday night also brought touring ballet to the downtown theater, part of a steady winter lineup of performances.

Looking ahead, the city’s planning commission meets Monday evening at the council chambers annex, and the next city council session is set for later this month. City officials also continue to accept applications for the 2026–27 grant cycle, which supports economic development projects and community events within Klamath Falls.
