Darien Daily: Super Bowl safety, police calls, and February reflections

As the first weekend of February rolls on, Darien is getting ready for Super Bowl Sunday, reflecting on Black History Month, and keeping an eye on neighborhood safety.

Police remind fans to plan a sober ride

With Super Bowl LX kicking off Sunday, city officials are urging anyone heading to a party or local bar to set up a sober ride before game time. The latest safety notice stresses that waiting until after you have started drinking is when bad decisions are most likely to happen.

The campaign echoes a familiar message: fans should not let friends drive drunk. Residents are being encouraged to use designated drivers, ride-hailing services, or to host gatherings where guests can stay the night if needed. Police say the goal is a celebration without crashes, injuries, or arrests.

Disorderly conduct case and library trespass

Darien police recently charged a 46-year-old resident with disorderly conduct after an incident involving children walking home from school. According to a police report, the man allegedly yelled at the kids, then got into his car, followed them, and continued to swear at them. He has been ordered to appear in court later this month.

In a separate case, officers cited a 52-year-old woman on a trespassing charge after she returned to Indian Prairie Public Library despite a prior notice that she was not allowed on the property. Police say staff called when they saw her enter, and officers issued a citation at the scene.

Darien marks Black History Month

The city is also taking time this week to recognize Black History Month and the 100th anniversary of the first national observance, originally launched as “Negro History Week” in 1926. A new note from city leaders encourages residents to learn more about the long history behind this month of reflection and celebration.

Residents are being pointed toward educational resources that highlight the contributions, creativity, and resilience of Black Americans. Local schools, libraries, and community groups are expected to weave the theme into lessons, displays, and discussions throughout February.
