Traffic stop leads to major meth seizure

Anniston police are highlighting the role of routine traffic enforcement after a stop in the Wellborn community turned into a significant drug bust this week. Officers say a driver refused to pull over at first, but the encounter stayed slow and controlled as they worked to get him stopped safely.

Once the vehicle was secured, officers searched it and reported finding trafficking-weight amounts of methamphetamine, along with drug paraphernalia and roughly $1,600 in cash. The suspect, identified as Melton Allen Mosley Jr., was arrested on multiple charges and booked into the Calhoun County Jail on a $300,000 trafficking bond.

Police noted that the Anniston–Oxford area remains a busy corridor for drug traffic moving off Interstate 20 and onto local routes such as the bypass. They say close coordination with neighboring departments is a key part of keeping those routes under watch.

County workshop focuses on screech owls and backyard habitat

For residents looking for something lighter — and more nature-focused — the Calhoun County Beautification Board is inviting the public to a Screech Owl Box Workshop in Anniston later this month. The hands-on session is set for Friday, February 13, from 10 a.m. to noon at the County Administration Building’s Extension Auditorium on Noble Street.

Participants will build and take home a nesting box designed for screech owls or kestrels, small birds of prey that help control rodents and other pests. The workshop costs $25 and is limited to the first 20 paid participants, and organizers suggest bringing a cordless drill if you have one. Registration is being handled through the Calhoun County Extension Office.

Civic calendar: meetings, town halls and a job fair

Looking ahead, county officials say the next Calhoun County Commission meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 12, at 10 a.m. at the administration building in Anniston. The county is also alerting voters in the Saks area to a polling-place change from Saks High School to Hillcrest, so residents there may want to double-check their voting information before the next election.

Inside the city, Anniston leaders are promoting several chances for residents to be heard. A Ward 3 town hall is planned for the evening of February 10 at the South Highland Community Center, and Ward 4 will hold a town hall on February 28 at the Norwood Hodges Community Center. Later in the month, on February 25, the city will partner with the Calhoun County Chamber and Economic Development Council for a job fair at the Anniston City Meeting Center.
