Monroe Daily Briefing: I-75 plans, taxes and weekend events

Good morning, Monroe. Here’s a quick look at the civic updates, deadlines and things to do around town as we start Sunday, February 8.

I-75 rebuilding open house coming up

State transportation officials are planning a major rebuild of about 2.4 miles of I-75 from Laplaisance Road to North Dixie Highway, affecting the city and nearby townships. An open house is set for Thursday, February 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the City Hall council chambers so residents and business owners can review the plans and ask questions.

The project would remove the Elm Avenue interchange to address long-standing weaving and safety issues, rebuild the Front Street interchange with better ramps for trucks, and rework traffic flow near Front Street and North Dixie Highway. Construction is expected to run from 2029 through 2030, so officials are starting public outreach early.

Winter tax bills due February 17

City winter tax bills are out, and payments are due Friday, February 17, without penalty. Residents can pay online, use the secure drop box next to City Hall, mail payments in time for a February 14 postmark, or pay in person at the treasurer’s office during regular business hours.

After February 17, a three percent penalty is added to unpaid winter bills and delinquent accounts are turned over to the county treasurer in March. If you have questions about your bill or assessment, the clerk-treasurer and assessing staff can help direct you to the right information.

What’s happening this weekend

Staying warm during the cold snap

Wind chills across eastern Michigan have dipped well below zero at times this weekend, and forecasters expect at least one more bitter night before a gradual warmup early next week.
