Nogales Daily: Border Waits, Weekend Events, and Local Updates
Border crossings stay busy into the weekend
Border traffic at the Nogales ports of entry remained heavy on Saturday, with long lines reported at the downtown and Mariposa crossings as shoppers and workers moved between Sonora and southern Arizona.
Recent wait-time snapshots showed general vehicle lanes stretching to around an hour or more at peak times on the southbound side, while trusted-traveler lanes saw shorter delays. Northbound, DeConcini reported only a few minutes of delay late Friday night, underscoring how quickly conditions can change.
Travel tips for Sunday border users
Locals planning a Sunday crossing may want to build in extra time around the morning and late-afternoon rush, when commuters and families typically pack the lanes. Having passports, visas and vehicle paperwork ready before you reach the booth can still shave precious minutes off the process.
- Check live wait-time tools shortly before you leave.
- Consider SENTRI or Ready Lanes if you qualify and travel often.
- If walking across, plan for lines during work and school hours.
Events within an easy drive of Nogales
For residents looking to get out of town, the Gem & Jam Festival continues today at the Pima County Fairgrounds south of Tucson, bringing electronic music, live bands and art installations through this evening. Several individual concerts are also scheduled there and at other southern Arizona venues today and tonight.
While most of these events are an hour or more north of Nogales by car, they remain popular weekend options for locals, especially with relatively mild weather in the forecast.
Community and environment notes
Santa Cruz County leaders are continuing a series of public conversations on groundwater and the South32 Hermosa mining project, following a midweek session in Nogales with a consulting hydrogeologist to review water-sampling results and answer community questions.
At the same time, regional economic advocates are highlighting Ambos Nogales as a growing logistics and manufacturing hub, pointing to billions of dollars in annual cross-border trade and a dense cluster of supply-chain employers anchored in and around the city.
Weather at a glance
Nogales is expected to see highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 50s today, with a mix of clouds and a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. That should make for comfortable conditions for errands, border trips and outdoor time, as long as residents keep an eye out for any passing showers.
