Extreme cold and wind grip the Sound Shore

After a coating of snow overnight, Mamaroneck is heading into one of the coldest weekends of the winter. Village officials have issued a weekend weather alert running through Sunday, with strong winds, icy spots and dangerous wind chills in the forecast.

Light snow Friday night into early Saturday is expected to leave around 1 to 2 inches, but the bigger issue is the wind. Gusts near 50 mph today could blow around unsecured objects and lead to scattered outages, while wind chills may drop to between minus 15 and minus 25 through early Sunday. Residents are urged to bundle up, limit time outside, bring pets indoors and check on neighbors who may need help.

The public library on Prospect Avenue is open Saturday as a designated warm-up location, and local officials are reminding tenants to report heat problems and to seek assistance programs if they are struggling to keep homes safely heated.

Village board set for a busy Monday night

Looking ahead to the start of the week, the village board will meet Monday, February 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the municipal courtroom on Mt. Pleasant Avenue. The agenda includes department head reports, public comment periods and several notable resolutions.

On the table are budget hearing dates, updates to board procedures and a contract for the village manager. Trustees are also scheduled to vote on additional funding for snow removal and vehicle repairs, and on a contract to create a new master plan for Harbor Island Park. The board plans to schedule public hearings on changes to the stormwater law and on term limits for many village boards and committees.

‘Freeze Out Cancer’ splash postponed

The extreme cold is even reshaping weekend charity plans on the water. Organizers of the inaugural Long Island Sound “Freeze Out Cancer” cold water super splash at Orienta Beach Club have postponed the event, which had been slated for this weekend.

The fundraiser, which benefits cancer-fighting efforts across the Sound Shore, will now be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 12:15 p.m. in Mamaroneck. Participants who already registered are being asked to hold the new date, and new swimmers are still welcome to sign up online as conditions improve later this winter.

Around town

Despite the frigid air, families turned out Friday evening for Pizza Bingo at the senior center and laced up skates Saturday afternoon for a character skate at Hommocks Park Ice Rink. Town recreation calendars highlight more winter activities ahead, including a Recreation Commission meeting on February 10, extended public skating on Presidents Day and a late-February workshop on making local yards healthier.
