Atlanta Morning Briefing: Reward in Postal Worker Killing, Lake Lanier Discovery, New AI Jobs Pilot
Atlanta Daily Briefing
Good morning, Atlanta. Here’s a quick look at some of the most important local stories developing as of February 17, 2026.
$250K reward in killing of metro Atlanta postal worker
Federal investigators have announced a reward of up to $250,000 for information leading to an arrest in the shooting death of a 31-year-old U.S. Postal Service letter carrier in DeKalb County.
The worker was fatally shot late last week while delivering mail along a Decatur route. Local police and federal agents are reviewing neighborhood surveillance video and canvassing the area, while grief counselors have been made available to postal employees shaken by the killing.
Authorities say the shooter should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information is urged to contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service or local law enforcement.
Body found in car pulled from Lake Lanier
Investigators are working to identify a person found dead inside a car that divers recovered from Lake Lanier on Monday afternoon.
The vehicle was pulled from the water near Tidwell Park with assistance from a Hall County dive team. Officials have not released details on how long the car may have been in the lake or any possible cause of death.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. Next of kin had not yet been notified as of late Monday, and authorities say additional information will be released once the victim is identified.
Atlanta launches AI-powered career readiness pilot
The City of Atlanta is partnering with career-tech firm WriteSea on a one-year pilot aimed at helping residents build job skills and navigate a fast-changing labor market.
Under the initiative, an initial group of 100 Atlanta residents will receive access to AI-powered tools for resume writing, interview preparation, and career planning, along with instructor-led workshops. City economic development officials say the goal is to expand access to practical job-search support and boost workforce participation.
The pilot is part of a broader push by Atlanta to use new technology to improve city services and economic opportunity, especially for residents who face barriers to stable employment.
Major data center campus proposed near Union City
A Blackstone-affiliated developer has filed plans for a large data center campus in Union City, adding to the metro area’s growing role as a national hub for digital infrastructure.
The proposal envisions up to five buildings totaling more than 1.5 million square feet on roughly 230 acres southwest of Atlanta. The first phase could be completed by 2028, pending regulatory review and local approvals.
Supporters say the project could bring new investment and tax revenue, while critics continue to raise broader questions about data centers’ energy and land use across metro Atlanta.
City expands use of Oracle cloud for permitting
Atlanta is also pushing ahead with a major overhaul of its permitting and inspections systems using cloud software and AI.
The city has selected Oracle’s Permitting and Licensing platform to modernize planning, zoning, permitting, code enforcement, and inspection workflows. Officials say the move will eventually give residents and businesses a more streamlined, online way to track applications and inspections, and is part of a larger digital transformation effort at City Hall.
