Worcester Daily: Storm Prep, Teen Death Investigation, Retail Theft Probe
Worcester, MA – February 22, 2026 – City braces for a major snowstorm as police probe a teen’s death at a home and track a $15K purse theft suspect.
City declares winter weather emergency ahead of major snow
Worcester is bracing for what officials describe as a major winter storm expected to begin today, with forecasts calling for heavy snow and blizzard-like conditions. City leaders have declared a Winter Weather Emergency and extended a declared winter parking ban as crews prepare to keep roads passable.
Residents are being urged to stay off city streets once the worst of the storm moves in, both to give plow drivers room to work and to avoid dangerous whiteout conditions. Worcester Public Schools, city offices, public libraries and the Residential Drop-Off Center are all slated to be closed on Monday, with trash and recycling collections delayed by a day for the rest of the week.
Officials note that drivers parked in violation of the ban risk tickets and towing, and they are reminding property owners that sidewalks must be cleared within hours after the storm ends. Those who are able are also encouraged to dig out nearby fire hydrants and catch basins to help with emergency access and drainage.
Teen dies in water-related incident at Worcester home
Police are investigating the death of a 14-year-old in what authorities are describing as a water-related incident at a Worcester residence. First responders were called to the home earlier this week after a report of a child in distress. Despite emergency efforts, the teen was later pronounced dead.
Investigators have released few details as they work to determine exactly what happened inside the home. Neighbors and community members have expressed sympathy for the family as they await more information. Police say there is no ongoing threat to the public connected to the case.
Police seek suspect after $15,000 purse theft
Worcester police are asking for help identifying a man accused of stealing approximately $15,000 worth of purses from a downtown consignment shop. Surveillance images show a suspect taking high-end merchandise before leaving the store, and investigators believe he may have fled in a blue vehicle.
The theft has rattled the small business, which relies on a mix of designer and vintage items to draw customers. Police have released still photos from the shop’s cameras and are urging anyone who recognizes the man or the vehicle to contact the detective bureau.
Firefighters mourn loss of Capt. Jason Couture
The Worcester Fire Department and broader community continue to mourn Capt. Jason C. Couture, a longtime firefighter who died last week at age 51. Couture, a Burncoat High graduate and Navy veteran, spent decades serving at multiple city fire stations and was most recently assigned to a ladder company based at Franklin Street.
Colleagues remember him as a steady leader and mentor, and local union leaders have described his passing as an active-duty loss. A funeral Mass is planned at St. John’s Church, where firefighters, family and friends are expected to gather to honor his career and support his loved ones.
