Colorado Springs daily local headlines: Durango Drive fire, Colorado River planning, and high fire danger
Colorado Springs, CO – February 23, 2026 – A Durango Drive fire collapses a roof, Utilities map long-term water resilience, and winds raise fire risk.
Durango Drive fire: roof collapse, cause under investigation
Firefighters were called to a commercial building in the 2600 block of Durango Drive on Friday morning after initial reports described an explosion. Crews said the roof collapsed as the fire intensified, and authorities urged people to avoid the area while crews worked.
No injuries were reported in early updates, and officials said they could not immediately confirm whether anyone was inside at the time of the collapse. Investigators are still working to determine what sparked the fire.
Colorado River uncertainty: Utilities point to long-term resilience plan
With Colorado River Basin states again failing to reach a new operating agreement by the Feb. 14 deadline, Colorado Springs Utilities says its planning already assumes less reliable Colorado River supplies. The utility estimates roughly half of the city’s water supply is tied to the Colorado River system, and more when reuse is factored in.
Utility leaders say the city’s long-range strategy focuses on diversifying supplies, building and maintaining storage, expanding water reuse, and developing additional Arkansas River Basin options through partnerships. The utility also highlighted that Colorado Springs has a water shortage ordinance that can be used if demand rises beyond available supply.
Federal officials are expected to finalize new operating guidelines for major Colorado River reservoirs by Oct. 1, 2026.
Warm, windy weather keeps fire danger elevated
A warm and breezy pattern is expected to keep fire danger top of mind across the Pikes Peak region. Forecasts call for temperatures well above seasonal averages, along with periods of stronger wind that can dry fuels quickly and make any new fire harder to control.
Local officials continue to encourage residents to follow any burn restrictions, secure trailer chains, and avoid parking hot vehicles over dry grass.
Traffic note: changes at Highway 24 and Peterson Road begin today
A slip lane from northbound Peterson Road to eastbound Space Village Avenue is set to permanently close on Monday as part of safety work at the Highway 24 interchange. Drivers should expect shifting lane configurations near the base’s north gate through Friday, and use posted detours and the signalized intersection to turn east.
