Weather: Rain in the valley, snow in the high country

A warm system tied to a weakening atmospheric river is expected to bring widespread valley rain from Tuesday into Wednesday, with the steadiest precipitation likely overnight and early Wednesday. In the mountains, snow levels are expected to start near about 6,500 feet and rise higher through the event, keeping the biggest accumulations above roughly 9,000 feet. Forecasts call for several inches to more than a foot in the highest terrain, while valley rain totals could range from about a quarter inch to around an inch.

Public safety: Arson charge filed after apartment fire

In a separate case affecting the Salt Lake Valley, prosecutors filed an aggravated arson charge against a 25-year-old tenant after a fire at a Murray apartment complex. Investigators alleged the blaze was intentionally set and estimated damage at about $250,000. The charging documents describe an evacuation, an attempted flight from officers, and injuries consistent with being near the fire.

Food and city life: New omakase options on the way

Downtown diners will soon have another reservation-worthy option: a new omakase-focused sushi concept is expected to open in March inside the historic Peery Hotel. Looking further ahead, a second Japanese restaurant is planned for the Granary District in 2027, in a historic building tied to the Pickle and Hide redevelopment area. Together, the announcements add to the steady drumbeat of new restaurant investment in and around the city core.
