Detroit Daily Local Headlines: Community Safety Office, Romulus ICE Protest, Snow Tonight
1) Detroit formalizes a new push on violence prevention
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield has launched the Mayorโs Office of Neighborhood and Community Safety, a new city office intended to coordinate and strengthen prevention-focused public safety work. City officials say the goal is to bring existing community violence intervention efforts under one umbrella, improve coordination with partners, and expand support for survivors.
The office is also expected to increase attention on domestic and intimate partner violence, an area city leaders say needs more targeted prevention strategies alongside traditional enforcement.
2) Protest targets proposed ICE detention center in Romulus
Regional immigration concerns spilled into the Detroit-area spotlight as demonstrators gathered outside Romulus City Hall to oppose plans tied to an ICE detention facility. Organizers and local leaders voiced concerns about detention expansion and urged more transparency about next steps.
Romulus city officials have publicly condemned the plan, even as questions remain about the timeline and what local authority can influence once federal actions move forward.
3) Snow expected this evening across metro Detroit
A band of snow is forecast to move into the area later today and continue overnight, with around 1 to 2 inches possible in parts of metro Detroit. Roads could turn slick quickly during the evening commute, especially where temperatures hover near freezing.
If youโre driving tonight, expect slower travel and leave extra braking distance on ramps and bridges.
4) Lodge Freeway crash causes major backups
Drivers also saw delays after a rollover crash narrowed traffic on the Lodge Freeway near the Davison area. Officials reduced the freeway to a single lane while crews worked the scene and cleared the roadway.
