Metro Detroit Gas Holds Above $4.33 as Diesel Rises to $5.48

Metro Detroit regular gasoline averaged $4.339 per gallon on Saturday, Aug. 1, while diesel averaged $5.484, according to the latest AAA Michigan price check. Regular gas rose 0.5 cents from the previous day’s $4.334 average. Diesel rose 3.1 cents from $5.453, making diesel the faster-moving fuel in the daily comparison.

The figures are Metro Detroit averages, not the price at every station in Detroit or across the region. Individual pumps can be higher or lower depending on location, competition and timing.

Diesel is moving faster than regular gas

The separate daily movements matter for commuters and businesses that use different types of vehicles. A 0.5-cent increase in regular gas is a small day-to-day change for most drivers, while the 3.1-cent diesel increase is more noticeable for operators of trucks, vans, buses, construction equipment and other diesel-powered vehicles.

AAA’s Aug. 1 Metro Detroit row also shows that both fuels remain well above their comparison points from earlier periods:

• Regular gas was up 12.6 cents from a week earlier, 23.3 cents from a month earlier and $1.144 from a year earlier.
• Diesel was up 19.9 cents from a week earlier, 20 cents from a month earlier and $1.739 from a year earlier.

That leaves regular gasoline above $4.33 per gallon and diesel above $5.48 in the latest metro average. The longer comparisons show that the increase is not limited to one day’s movement.

Midwest prices provide broader context

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s July 28 release also showed higher prices across the broader Midwest market during the week ending July 27. EIA listed Midwest regular gasoline at $3.882 per gallon, up 10.2 cents from the prior week. Midwest on-highway diesel was $5.196 per gallon, up 20.8 cents over the same period.

Those EIA figures describe the Midwest region and should not be read as Detroit or Metro Detroit prices. AAA’s Metro Detroit data is the more specific measure for local pump-price comparisons.

What higher fuel costs can mean locally

For commuters, the effect depends on mileage, vehicle efficiency and how often they fill up. Households with longer daily drives may see the increases add to weekly transportation budgets, especially when regular gas remains elevated over several weeks.

Diesel prices can also put pressure on contractors, delivery operators, landscapers, maintenance companies and other service businesses that use work trucks or equipment. Fuel is one operating cost among many, so the local effect will vary by business, route length and ability to pass costs through to customers.

Restaurants and retailers that rely on deliveries may also be watching diesel prices, while weekend travelers face station prices that may differ substantially from the metro average. The next AAA check will show whether the daily diesel increase continues or begins to ease.
