1) City Hall: Council approves ongoing, third-party efficiency audits

Austin City Council voted Thursday, Feb. 26, to launch a standing, citywide efficiency assessment program that will bring in an outside consultant to review how departments operate and where costs or processes can be improved.

The city auditor is expected to oversee the work, with public updates and a requirement that city leaders respond to recommendations by explaining what will be implemented or why they disagree. The program was framed as a way to rebuild confidence in budgeting and service delivery after last year’s high-profile tax-rate election defeat. A procurement process is expected to begin soon, and the total cost has not been set.

2) Public safety: Fatal hit-and-run under investigation on South Congress

Austin police are investigating a fatal crash that happened early Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the 7300 block of South Congress Avenue. Police say a vehicle struck a pedestrian, the pedestrian died at the scene, and the driver left without notifying emergency services.

The case is being tracked as Austin’s 13th fatal crash of 2026. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Vehicular Homicide unit or submit an anonymous tip through the local tip line listed in the city’s release.

3) Elections: Last day of early voting for the March 3 primaries

Today, Friday, Feb. 27, is the final day to vote early in person for the Texas primary elections ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, March 3. Local election officials note that some vote centers may run extended hours for the final push, and voters should confirm times and locations before heading out.

If you miss early voting, standard Election Day hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at your assigned polling place.

4) Weather watch: Late-February heat lingers, fire risk stays elevated

Unseasonably warm afternoons are continuing across Central Texas, with Austin tracking toward one of its hottest February tallies for 80-degree days.
