Deputy-involved shooting investigated near Galt

Sacramento County sheriff’s officials say a suspect died after a deputy-involved shooting Friday morning along New Hope Road, west of Galt near the community of Thornton. Deputies were responding to a report that a woman might be in distress inside a vehicle. After contacting a man and woman and moving the woman to a patrol vehicle for safety, officials say the man produced a shotgun from the vehicle. A deputy attempted to de-escalate and repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon before shots were fired. No deputies were reported injured, and the suspect’s identity had not been released as of Friday.

Fix50 weekend lane squeeze planned in downtown

Drivers should plan extra time this weekend: transportation crews are scheduling a 55-hour lane reduction on eastbound Highway 50 from the Interstate 5 connector to 9th Street. The work window is set to begin at 10 p.m. Friday and run through 5 a.m. Monday, with additional connector-lane changes and a reduced work-zone speed limit. The work is part of the long-running effort to add new HOV lane miles and improve the corridor through central Sacramento.

Free Museum Weekend returns March 7–8

A popular regional tradition is back next weekend, with about 20 area museums expected to participate in Free Museum Weekend on March 7 and March 8. Admission is free, but timed-entry tickets require advance registration due to capacity limits. Organizers say ticket registration opens March 2 and runs until March 5 (or until tickets are gone), with tens of thousands of tickets available across participating sites.

Weather watch: springlike warmth, then a small dip

Forecasters say Sacramento is tracking for unusually warm late-February temperatures, with highs pushing into the mid-70s and record-challenging warmth possible this weekend. A Pacific system could also bring isolated thunderstorms to parts of Northern California, with a chance of some wraparound showers early next week before temperatures ease back closer to seasonal norms.
