A Modesto man was airlifted to a specialty hospital Saturday afternoon, Feb. 28, after an explosive device caused severe damage to his hand. Fire officials said the call came in around 12:20 p.m. on the 1900 block of Woodland Avenue.

Investigators were working to determine whether the device was a firework-type explosive. County fire investigators and sheriff’s deputies responded at the scene as the incident remained under review.
