Modesto Gas Holds Near $5.46 as Diesel Rises to $6.78 on Aug. 1

Regular gasoline prices in the Modesto metro were nearly flat on Aug. 1, while diesel moved higher. AAA’s latest check listed regular gas at an average of $5.457 per gallon and diesel at $6.781.

Regular gas edged lower

AAA’s regular-gas average was down 0.3 cents from $5.460 on July 31 and down 0.1 cent from $5.458 one week earlier.

Despite the small daily and weekly declines, regular gasoline remained higher than earlier comparison points. The Aug. 1 average was 11.3 cents above the level from one month earlier and $1.193 above the year-ago average.

For commuters and households, a nearly unchanged daily average does not erase the larger increase compared with earlier in the summer or with August 2025. Fuel costs can add up quickly for people with long drives, multiple vehicles or frequent weekend travel.

Diesel rose from the previous day and week

Diesel averaged $6.781 per gallon in the Modesto metro, up 0.7 cent from $6.774 on July 31 and 5.6 cents from $6.725 a week earlier.

The diesel average was also 21.2 cents higher than one month ago and $1.522 higher than one year ago. That movement matters for agricultural operations, freight and delivery fleets, contractors, farmers, restaurants, service businesses and other work vehicles that rely on diesel.

Higher diesel costs can add to operating budgets even when the regular-gas average is barely moving. Businesses may face added expenses for deliveries, equipment, field work and transportation, and those costs can affect the prices of goods and services.
