Fayetteville Daily Headlines: Primary results, school plans, and a new foam recycling drop-off
Fayetteville, NC – March 5, 2026 – Primary results are in, schools revisit year-round plans, and a new foam recycling option launches at Ann Street.
Here’s a quick, Fayetteville-focused scan of what’s new across city and county government, schools, and services over the past few days.
Top story: Primary results roll in
A countywide results roundup posted Thursday lists early winners in several races that will shape the November ballot. Election officials cautioned that totals can still change as provisional ballots are reviewed and eligible military and overseas absentee ballots arrive. A formal canvass is scheduled for March 13.
Among the notable matchups: the Democratic and Republican nominees were set in the state House District 43 race, and incumbents also prevailed in other contests highlighted in the update, including a U.S. House primary in one of the districts that includes parts of Fayetteville.
Schools: Year-round calendar reversal on the table
A school board committee voted to recommend undoing several February decisions, including a move that would have shifted E.E. Miller Elementary from a year-round calendar to a traditional one. The committee also recommended revisiting facility actions tied to demolition and consolidations, with the items now headed to the full board.
Recycling: Foam drop-off now available
Cumberland County says residents can now recycle certain foam products thanks to a new densifier installed at the Ann Street Landfill on Ann Street. The county says accepted items include common food-service foam and some packaging foam, and residents can drop approved materials at container sites as well.
City Hall: Special meeting set for March 12
The City Council posted notice of a special meeting on Thursday, March 12 at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall. The stated purpose is a discussion of legislative priorities with the Cumberland County Delegation.
Also worth a look
A separate government update this week noted the council recently rejected a proposal that would have created a petition process for residential ‘no parking’ zones, and it flagged the start of the county’s annual budget planning cycle.
