Busy Weekend in Bakersfield: Volunteers, Concert Crowds, and Condors Hockey

Volunteer Big Kern Draws Hundreds

Saturday marked the second annual Volunteer Big Kern, a one-day service event connecting residents with nonprofits across Kern County. Participants signed up in advance and reported directly to assigned project sites early this morning.

Organizers say last year’s event drew more than 800 volunteers, logging thousands of service hours. This year’s effort aims to build on that momentum, with projects ranging from environmental cleanups to support for local families and seniors. A midday celebration is planned at the Blue Zones Project office on California Avenue to recognize volunteers and partner organizations.

The Expendables Light Up Downtown

Music fans filled the historic Nile Theater Friday night as California reggae-rock band The Expendables took the stage. The March 6 show brought a lively downtown crowd, continuing a steady run of touring acts stopping in Bakersfield this spring.

The performance added to a growing list of entertainment events helping anchor weekend foot traffic in the city’s core, with local restaurants and bars seeing the ripple effect before and after the show.

Condors Host Tucson at Dignity Health Arena

Sports fans also had reason to head downtown Friday as the Bakersfield Condors faced off against the Tucson Roadrunners at Dignity Health Arena. The matchup is part of the AHL regular season push, with teams jockeying for position as playoffs approach.

Home games continue to be a major draw, bringing families and longtime hockey supporters together for another high-energy night on the ice.
