Police Oversight Reset, Fire Weather Alerts, and Weekend Fundraisers Lead Local Headlines
Colorado Springs, CO – March 9, 2026 – Police watchdog seeks disbanding, fire weather alerts issued, and community fundraisers fill the weekend.
Colorado Springs is starting the week with big conversations about police oversight, heightened fire danger along the Front Range, and a full slate of community events.
Police Oversight Panel Seeks Disbanding
The city’s Law Enforcement Transparency and Advisory Commission has formally asked City Council to disband the group, saying it lacks the authority to provide meaningful oversight of the Colorado Springs Police Department.
The 13-member panel was created in 2020 following national protests and local concerns over use-of-force incidents. Its chair said the commission cannot propose policy changes or access information beyond what is already public. City Council is expected to begin discussing the request at its March 23 study session.
The move raises fresh questions about how police accountability will be handled moving forward and whether a new oversight structure could replace the current model.
Fire Weather Alerts South of the City
Warm temperatures, dry air and gusty winds prompted fire weather watches and red flag warnings over the weekend, especially south of Colorado Springs along the Interstate 25 corridor.
Forecasters say sunshine and mild conditions are helping dry out fuels quickly. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and use caution with anything that could spark a fire. While the mountains continue to see winter conditions, the southern Front Range is facing elevated wildfire risk as spring approaches.
Community Fundraisers and Events
Local nonprofit and business groups are also keeping calendars busy. A series of fundraising events kicked off March 8, including charity bowling events, a prom dress sale benefiting a menstrual equity nonprofit, and a monthlong restaurant fundraiser supporting the 2026 Special Olympic USA Games.
Business networking meetups and financial wellness webinars are scheduled throughout the week, offering opportunities for young professionals and entrepreneurs to connect.
With policy debates unfolding and fire danger in the forecast, community events are providing a reminder of the strong local network that continues to define Colorado Springs.
