El Paso City Council Battles Gas Hike, Traffic Woes and Marathon Rush
El Paso’s week is shaping up with big developments at City Hall, on local roads, and across the sports scene.
City Pushes Back on Gas Rate Hike
El Paso City Council has authorized legal action to challenge a proposed rate increase from Texas Gas Service. City leaders argue the hike would place an unnecessary burden on residents already managing higher living costs.
At the same time, council members announced progress on electric bill relief. State regulators rejected a proposal that could have raised electric costs, a move city officials say will result in an estimated $10.4 million in savings for customers. Leaders described the dual effort as part of a broader strategy to shield households from rising utility expenses.
Frontera Road Congestion Plan Advances
The city is also moving forward with traffic mitigation efforts along Frontera Road. Officials say new development near the state line has led to congestion and spillover traffic into nearby neighborhoods.
The proposed improvements aim to keep cut-through traffic off residential streets while maintaining smoother flow along major corridors. Residents in the area have raised concerns about safety and travel times, prompting the city to accelerate its response.
Marathon Set for Record Turnout
More than 700 runners are expected to take part in this weekend’s El Paso Marathon, which will feature a new 26.2-mile course through Downtown. Organizers anticipate a record turnout, with additional participants in half-marathon and relay events.
Drivers should plan ahead for temporary road closures Sunday as runners make their way through central El Paso. City officials say the updated route is designed to showcase local landmarks while improving crowd flow and runner experience.
From utility bills to traffic patterns and a major community race, it’s a busy stretch for the Sun City as March gets underway.
