Cleveland Council Advances 2026 Budget as MAC Tournament Tips Off Downtown
Cleveland, OH – March 11, 2026 – City Council debates the 2026 budget, CSU names a new enrollment chief, and Monster Jam roars back downtown.
Cleveland leaders are moving key priorities forward this week, from finalizing the city budget to preparing for a major college basketball tournament downtown.
City Council Nears Final Vote on 2026 Budget
Cleveland City Council and Mayor Justin Bibb have reached an agreement on amendments to the city’s 2026 operating budget. The updated plan adds $17.5 million in allocations aimed at neighborhood-level improvements.
The deal boosts road resurfacing funding to $20 million, increases support for neighborhood improvement projects in each ward, and directs new dollars toward park maintenance, housing stabilization and safety programs. Council is expected to move the budget toward a final vote after required readings and publication.
City officials say Cleveland ended 2025 with strong reserves, giving lawmakers flexibility to address infrastructure and quality-of-life concerns while maintaining financial stability.
County Council Holds Executive Session
At the county level, Cuyahoga County Council met Tuesday in a Committee of the Whole session, including an executive session at the County Administration Building on East 9th Street.
While executive sessions are closed to the public for specific legal or personnel matters, the meeting reflects a busy stretch for county government as budget planning and policy discussions ramp up ahead of spring deadlines.
MAC Tournament Returns to Cleveland
Downtown Cleveland is also preparing to welcome fans for the 2026 Mid-American Conference men’s basketball tournament, set for March 12 through March 14.
The tournament brings teams and supporters from across the region and is expected to generate a boost for local restaurants, hotels and small businesses. With games scheduled throughout the weekend, city officials anticipate increased foot traffic near Rocket Arena and surrounding entertainment districts.
Together, the budget progress at City Hall and a packed sports calendar signal an active start to March in Cleveland.
