Burke Lakefront Plans Advance as ODOT Launches Major Road Projects
Cleveland, OH – April 1, 2026 – City leaders weigh Burke lakefront plans as ODOT launches major road projects and new mixed-use listings hit market.
Cleveland is heading into April with big conversations about land, infrastructure and investment shaping the city’s future.
New Vision for Burke Lakefront Airport
Two redevelopment concepts for the 450-acre Burke Lakefront Airport site were unveiled this week, offering residents a fresh look at what could replace the downtown airport if it closes.
The recreation-focused concepts include a lakefront promenade with restaurants, a marina, hotels, sports fields, trails and even RV camping. City officials say the ideas are meant to spark public imagination and discussion, not serve as final blueprints.
An accompanying economic impact study suggests redevelopment could generate long-term revenue and reshape public access to the waterfront. City Council is expected to take up the findings in hearings later this month, setting the stage for what could become one of Cleveland’s most consequential land-use decisions in decades.
Record Roadwork Season Begins
At the same time, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced nearly 1,000 projects statewide for the 2026 construction season, valued at a record $3.4 billion.
In Cuyahoga County, a major highlight is the long-term reconstruction of I-90 between East 9th Street and Carnegie Avenue. The project includes pavement replacement and bridge work and is expected to stretch into the early 2030s.
State leaders say the investment underscores Ohio’s continued focus on roadway safety and modernization. For Cleveland drivers, it also means another summer of orange barrels and detours across key corridors.
Mixed-Use Momentum Near University Circle
Meanwhile, a newly listed mixed-use parcel on East 115th Street is drawing attention in the University Circle area. The 0.2-acre site is being marketed for commercial or residential development, surrounded by hospitals, universities and ongoing neighborhood reinvestment.
While small in scale compared to Burke, the listing reflects steady infill activity in high-demand districts where proximity to institutions and transit continues to drive real estate interest.
Together, these developments highlight a city balancing long-range planning with immediate infrastructure upgrades and incremental neighborhood growth.
