Atlanta council to consider mandatory sidewalk detours at construction sites

Atlanta City Council is scheduled for Monday, June 15, to consider an ordinance that would require the Atlanta Department of Transportation to set up temporary pedestrian routes when construction blocks a sidewalk. The proposal would move Atlanta from a case-by-case approach to a mandatory rule. Atlanta News First reported that current city code lets temporary routes be established at the transportation commissioner’s discretion in some situations, while the new ordinance would make the routes required.
