Flash flood warning snarls San Antonio commute in Northeast Bexar County
A flash flood warning for northeastern Bexar County is disrupting Monday travel in San Antonio, with water rescues, road closures and safety alerts.
Monday morning’s flash flood warning is disrupting San Antonio travel, especially in northeastern Bexar County. The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio said the warning was extended until 10 a.m. Monday after emergency management reported water rescues, numerous low-water crossing closures and thunderstorms that produced heavy rain across the warned area.
The warning is active and dangerous, not just a rain alert. As of 8:14 a.m., the weather service said between 3 and 6 inches of rain had already fallen, with up to another inch possible. Its impact statement says flash flooding can hit creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.
Why drivers need to pay attention
For commuters, the risk is how fast conditions can change on flooded streets, underpasses and low-water crossings. Once a neighborhood road closes, traffic can back up onto nearby routes that people usually count on to get across town.
San Antonio Current reported more than 30 road closures and roughly 600 Bexar County residents without power as of press time, mostly on the North Side. The same report said some school openings were delayed.
City and county officials are pointing residents to live tools before they leave home: the City of San Antonio’s street-closure map, Bexar County’s road-closure and HALT pages, and the city’s flood guidance page.
What officials want you to do
- Avoid low-water crossings, underpasses and flooded intersections.
- Do not drive or walk into floodwater.
- Check official closure maps before traveling.
- Keep watching National Weather Service updates, since conditions can change quickly.
For workers, parents and delivery drivers, the safest move may be to delay travel until the warning area and nearby roads are checked again.
