Wilmington buys Sciarappa Farm for nearly $11M, keeping 63 acres near I-93
Wilmington MA – The town spent nearly $11 million to buy Sciarappa Farm, blocking proposed development at 333 Andover Street and keeping 63 acres near I-93 in town hands.
Wilmington has approved spending nearly $11 million to buy Sciarappa Farm, a wooded 63-acre parcel at 333 Andover Street near I-93, removing a site that had been targeted for future development.
According to NBC Boston’s reporting, the land drew both commercial interest and a residential proposal that was first described at 650 units and later reduced to 300. The purchase means the parcel stays in town hands instead of becoming a private buildout.
This is not the same as a permanent conservation restriction or a finished park plan. It is, however, a major local spending decision that gives Wilmington more control over a prominent stretch of land in a corridor where traffic, density, and growth pressure are already concerns.
What it means for residents
For homeowners, commuters, and nearby businesses, the immediate takeaway is that one large development option is off the table. What the town does next will determine whether the property remains undeveloped, is held for future civic use, or becomes part of a longer-term planning discussion.
A March 23 Select Board agenda also shows town officials had been discussing 333 Andover Street in executive session before the purchase became public, underscoring how long the property had been in play. Wilmington’s Town Meeting process is the local legislative framework for major spending and land decisions, which is why deals like this draw close attention from residents who follow budgets, taxes, and neighborhood change.
