Metro Detroit is under an ozone air-quality alert while a dangerous heat wave builds. CBS Detroit said the alert was issued for Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, St. Clair and Wayne counties, including Detroit, and WDET said it was in effect for Monday and Tuesday.
The weather setup is part of the problem. The National Weather Service says an Extreme Heat Warning runs from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday evening, with highs in the mid-90s to 100 degrees and heat index values above 105. EGLE says ground-level ozone forms on warm, sunny days when pollution reacts in the air.
State guidance says ozone is unhealthy to breathe and can narrow the airways, making the lungs work harder. People most likely to feel it include children, older adults, people with asthma or other chronic respiratory disease, and adults who exercise or work outdoors.
For Detroit residents, the practical response is simple: cut back on strenuous outdoor activity, delay refueling vehicles or using gas-powered lawn equipment if you can, and check official air-quality updates before heading out. WDET also reported that Detroit recreation centers and public library branches can serve as cooling centers during normal business hours.
