Iowa City seeks input on possible Johnson Street Bridge replacement

Iowa City is asking residents how they use the Johnson Street Bridge over Ralston Creek and what they would want from a possible replacement.

The city posted the survey notice on July 20, 2026. The survey asks about current use of the bridge and residents’ thoughts on improvements such as a wider, safer structure and better connections. Iowa City says the survey should take no more than five minutes.

Why the bridge is part of a larger application

The Johnson Street Bridge is included in a planned Iowa application for the Federal Highway Administration’s Fiscal Year 2026 Competitive Highway Bridge Program. Iowa City says the Iowa Department of Transportation is working with local governments on an application covering 32 bridges identified in the application materials as being in poor condition.

The proposed bundled application is intended to compete for federal funding for bridge replacement or rehabilitation projects. The Federal Highway Administration posted the Fiscal Year 2026 funding opportunity on June 26, 2026, and lists Iowa among the states eligible to apply.

The city says the bridge projects could improve safety and connections to nearby schools, businesses, hospitals and parks. For Iowa City residents, that makes the Johnson Street Bridge relevant not only to drivers, but also to commuters, students, nearby businesses and people traveling between neighborhoods.

What residents should not assume yet

The survey is an information-gathering step, not a final design decision. The city has not announced a final replacement design, construction date, project cost, detour plan or closure schedule in the survey notice.

Likewise, inclusion in Iowa’s bundled application does not mean the Iowa City bridge has received federal funding. The Federal Highway Administration will determine which eligible applications receive grants. Iowa DOT materials identify the Competitive Highway Bridge Program as a discretionary federal funding program, separate from formula transportation programs.

The Johnson Street Bridge is also part of a broader regional transportation-planning system. The Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County coordinates long-range transportation planning for Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, Tiffin and University Heights, with public input used to help shape transportation priorities.

What happens next

For now, the immediate action available to residents is to review the city’s notice and complete the survey if they use the Johnson Street Bridge or are affected by its connections. The larger questions—whether Iowa’s application will win funding, what design would be selected, how much replacement would cost and when work could begin—remain open.
