Memphis to close South Front Street segment for sewer work through Sept. 30

Memphis is scheduled to close South Front Street between Mina Avenue and Butler Avenue in downtown Memphis beginning Monday, September 14, for sanitary sewer construction. The city expects the closure to continue through September 30, subject to construction timing.

Traffic-control devices will be used on the affected segment. The scheduled closure is expected to last about 17 days, but September 30 is an expected end date rather than a guaranteed completion date.

What is closing

The closure covers South Front Street between Mina Avenue and Butler Avenue. Downtown drivers, workers, residents, delivery operators and nearby businesses should plan for access and traffic disruption along that South Front Street segment during the construction period.

The city notice does not establish additional detour routes, parking restrictions, sidewalk closures or transit changes. Travelers should account for the closure when planning access to downtown.

Why the work is happening

The SARP10 team is scheduled to install new sanitary sewer infrastructure as part of Memphis’ Sewer Assessment and Rehabilitation Program.

SARP10 is a citywide program focused on assessing, rehabilitating and improving Memphis’ sanitary sewer system. Its stated goal is to minimize sanitary sewer overflows. The program description does not establish that overflow problems have already been reduced at this location.

Separate from other Front Street construction

This sewer-related closure is separate from the Front Street Improvements project near the Memphis Art Museum. That project covers Front Street between Union Avenue and Monroe Avenue and is scheduled in phases, with the overall work listed through December 1.

Downtown Memphis’ road-closure listing separately identifies the SARP10 work involving G.E. Patterson Avenue and South Front Street and the Front Street Improvements work near Union Avenue and Monroe Avenue. Action News 5 reported that the Union-to-Monroe project is intended to improve pedestrian safety and includes ADA-accessible curb ramps, curb bump-outs, sidewalk improvements and landscaping.

For the South Front Street sewer project, the city expects the Mina Avenue-to-Butler Avenue closure to remain in place through September 30, subject to construction timing.
