Van Nuys Night Closures Begin July 30 Near Van Nuys Boulevard

Another nighttime street restriction is scheduled to begin Thursday, July 30, near Van Nuys Boulevard as Metro advances construction of the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit project.

Calvert Street west of Van Nuys Boulevard is scheduled for full nighttime closures from July 30 through August 18. The work is for telecommunications relocation and is planned Monday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The Calvert Street work will overlap with a separate restriction on Vanowen Street that began July 24 and is scheduled to continue through September 11.

Two different closure patterns

Vanowen Street will not be closed completely on both sides at the same time. Metro’s street-closure tracker says construction will alternate between the east or west side of Vanowen Street near Van Nuys Boulevard, with one side closed during the work. The work is needed for waterline installation.

Calvert Street is different. The segment west of Van Nuys Boulevard is scheduled for full nighttime closure during its estimated July 30-August 18 work period.

Both locations are listed for weekday overnight work from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The dates and exact closure limits are estimates, and Metro updates its schedule weekly.

What Van Nuys residents should expect

Drivers traveling near Van Nuys Boulevard should allow extra time, follow posted detours and traffic-control directions, and expect changing lane conditions. The restrictions may be most noticeable for people traveling during late-evening and early-morning hours.

Parking may be restricted in posted areas near the work zones. People who usually park on or near Vanowen or Calvert streets should check signs before leaving a vehicle, since temporary restrictions can change with the construction schedule.

Nearby businesses and residents should continue to have access, but Metro’s construction notice warns that traffic delays and other temporary effects are expected. Access to residences and businesses is expected to be maintained subject to construction conditions. Emergency responder access is also expected to remain available.

Bus stops may be temporarily relocated if construction conditions require it. Transit riders should follow posted notices and check Metro service information before traveling through the area.

Why the work is happening

The closures are part of Metro’s East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit project, which is being built along Van Nuys Boulevard. The project page identifies the line as a 6.7-mile light rail route with 11 planned stations between the Metro G Line Van Nuys Station and San Fernando Road.
