Kankakee I-57 interchange appears in IDOT review documents, not July 31 bid

The planned reconstruction of Kankakee’s East Court Street interchange at I-57 and Illinois 17 appears in Illinois Department of Transportation materials for the July 31, 2026, letting. But the project is not scheduled to receive bids in that letting.

IDOT’s contract detail for project 01X-66863 says the material was published for review and inspection by potential bidders and suppliers. It specifically identifies the project as not being for bid in the July 31 letting. That makes the listing a pre-bid milestone, not a construction award or confirmation that work will begin this week.

What IDOT plans to rebuild

The project calls for replacing the existing interchange with a single-point urban diamond design. The proposed work includes reconstruction of about 1.6 miles of I-57 and 0.73 miles of Illinois 17, along with pavement reconstruction, drainage work, traffic signals, retaining walls and noise walls.

The letting materials also describe replacement of the bridges carrying northbound and southbound I-57 traffic and replacement of the bridge carrying the KB&S Railroad over I-57. The new interchange is intended to accommodate a future six-lane section of I-57.

IDOT’s project page says the broader design could require permanent or temporary closures or relocations of some local streets and entrances, as well as additional right-of-way acquisition. The agency’s final noise-analysis memorandum examined potential effects near homes, multifamily properties, a cemetery and playgrounds, including locations where noise barriers were proposed for consideration.

Timeline remains unsettled

Shaw Local’s Daily Journal reported in May that bidding could occur later and that construction might begin in spring 2027, with completion potentially extending into late 2029 or early 2030. Those dates are reported expectations, not confirmed IDOT commitments.

The key milestones still to watch are a future IDOT bid listing, the selection of a contractor, a formal award and a construction schedule. Until those steps occur, residents and drivers should not treat July 31 as either the project’s bid date or the start of construction.

Why the project matters locally

If the reconstruction moves forward, it could eventually change traffic patterns and access at the East Court Street interchange. Drivers may face transportation changes during construction, but IDOT has not yet confirmed the final construction sequence, detours or timing.

Nearby residents and property owners could also see construction noise, changes in roadway access and longer-term effects from the redesigned interchange and proposed noise-control measures. The noise-analysis documents do not mean that every nearby property will receive a barrier or experience the same conditions.

For now, the clearest update is that the East Court Street interchange has advanced into public-facing pre-bid review. The next meaningful change will be an official bidding or award action from IDOT—not the July 31 listing itself.
