Latrobe bridge project advances, but construction timing remains unsettled

The New Steele Bridge preservation project serving Latrobe and Derry Township is moving closer to construction, but the available official schedules do not yet match.

The bridge carries North Ligonier Street and McFarland Road over Loyalhanna Creek at the Latrobe-Derry Township connection. PennDOT’s project page, updated July 8, lists the work in the construction phase and gives a proposed construction window from fall 2026 through fall 2027.

Why the bridge work matters

PennDOT describes the project as preservation work intended to address structural deficiencies in primary bridge elements and extend the bridge’s useful life. The agency says the work is designed to maintain connections for residents, businesses, municipal services and emergency responders while helping avoid the higher costs that could result from continued deterioration.

That makes the project relevant beyond the bridge itself. The crossing supports local travel between Latrobe and surrounding parts of Derry Township, including routes used for business access, public services and emergency response. The records reviewed do not show that the bridge is currently closed, under active construction or subject to a confirmed detour.

Funding and county action

Westmoreland County commissioners’ minutes from February 12 show that programmed funding for the construction phase increased from $800,000 to $4 million. The minutes also document construction-phase authorization connected to the Latrobe bridge project.

A March 26 county public works agenda separately listed construction-plan review for the Loyalhanna bridge preservation work involving Latrobe and Derry Township. Those records show the project advancing beyond preliminary planning and design, but they do not establish that physical work has begun.

Two different timelines

PennDOT’s project page lists fall 2026 as the proposed construction start and fall 2027 as the proposed end. Westmoreland County’s current roads-and-bridges project page gives a later anticipated sequence: a notice to proceed in September, ground work beginning in spring 2027 and completion in fall 2028.

The difference is important for residents and commuters. A proposed PennDOT construction window should not be treated as a final work schedule, and the county’s notice-to-proceed, ground-work and completion dates are also identified as anticipated milestones rather than guarantees.

Additional official updates will be needed to confirm when a construction contract is fully authorized, when work will begin, whether traffic restrictions or detours will be required, and which completion date will govern. For now, the clearest takeaway is that the New Steele Bridge project is moving toward construction, while its final timing remains unsettled.
