Jamestown schools plan interim year as leadership, facilities plans advance

Jamestown schools will enter the 2026-27 school year with Katherine Sipala serving as interim superintendent while the School Committee reviews how the district should structure its permanent leadership.

A July 2026 message from the Jamestown School Department says David Raleigh left Jamestown for a full-time superintendent position in North Smithfield. Sipala is serving in the interim role during the leadership transition.

The School Committee is evaluating whether the next superintendent position should be full-time or part-time. The district expects to seek public input during that review and hopes to post a position in early fall. That timing remains a plan, not a completed search milestone.

Facilities planning is also underway

At the same time, Jamestown schools are developing a 2026 Educational Facilities Master Plan. The district says the work is being supported largely through a grant from the Van Beuren Charitable Foundation and includes public-engagement materials.

A district procurement record also shows that Jamestown sought architectural and engineering services for comprehensive educational facilities master planning.

A master plan is an early-stage planning process. It may help the district identify building needs, capacity or program questions, and possible capital priorities. It could also provide information for future capital requests or applications through Rhode Island’s school-construction process.

For families, staff and taxpayers, the immediate significance is that the district is examining both leadership and long-term facilities needs at the same time. The planning work could shape later discussions about school investments, but it does not establish that a construction, renovation or expansion project has been approved.

September deadline provides a planning milestone

The Rhode Island Department of Education says Stage I applications in the Necessity of School Construction process are due by September 15, 2026, for the spring approval timeline. The process includes assessments of facility conditions, demographic projections, educational programs and districtwide capacity before potential solutions are developed.

That deadline gives Jamestown a near-term state process milestone to consider as its facilities work advances. It does not show that Jamestown has submitted a project, secured state aid or committed local borrowing.

Residents should watch for the School Committee’s decisions about the superintendent model, opportunities to provide input and additional materials from the facilities planning process. Future costs, project priorities and construction timelines remain unresolved until the district completes its planning and the School Committee takes formal action.
