Providence Public Schools Superintendent Javier Montaรฑez announced on Oct. 30, 2026, that he intended to step down, but his final workday had not been set as of that date. A district spokesperson said Oct. 30 that discussions with the School Board to finalize his departure were continuing and he would continue overseeing the district in the meantime. The announcement did not create an immediate vacancy.
School Board President TyโRelle Stephens said Oct. 30 that the board expected to post an interim-superintendent opening early the week of Nov. 2. The planned search was to consider qualified internal candidates first, with external candidates considered if needed. As of Oct. 30, the posting had not gone live and no interim appointment had been made.
The announced transition came about four months after governance returned to the city and locally elected School Board on July 1, 2026; state management began in 2019. Montaรฑez began working in Providence schools in 1996 and became superintendent in 2021.
