Uniontown Travelers Face Layton-Area Stoppages Through October

Travelers from Uniontown and surrounding communities should expect recurring traffic stoppages near the Layton Bridge project beginning July 20 and continuing through October, according to PennDOT District 12.

The stoppages, scheduled as needed and lasting up to 15 minutes, affect Route 4038, also known as Layton Road, Tunnel Road and the Great Allegheny Passage Trail. PennDOT says the controls are tied to blasting for the Layton Bridge Replacement Project in Perry Township, Fayette County.

What is happening near Layton

PennDOT’s July 14 notice does not describe continuous closures. Instead, flaggers will stop travel on both sides of the roads and trail during blasting operations. Crews will inspect the area after each blast before allowing travel to resume. The work depends on weather and operations.

The Great Allegheny Passage is included in the notice, so trail users should be prepared for temporary stoppages when traveling through the Layton-area section. PennDOT did not publish one daily schedule covering every stoppage.

How the work relates to Uniontown

Uniontown is the reader focus, but the Layton project is outside the city limits. It is part of a broader 2026 PennDOT program covering Fayette County. The Fayette County construction map includes bridge preservation, bridge replacement, resurfacing, roadway and safety projects at locations across the county, including routes connecting Uniontown with nearby communities.

The map lists July 16 and July 30, 2026, let dates for projects including a countywide bridge-bearing-cleaning project and Fayette and Greene resurfacing work. A let date is a procurement or scheduling milestone; it does not by itself show that construction began on that date. The timing of individual projects, lane restrictions and detours can vary by location.

A separate PennDOT notice for the 2026 Fayette County epoxy-overlay project describes short-term lane closures on Routes 21, 40 and 119 and a weekend detour for Route 51. Those controls are separate from the blasting-related stoppages near Layton and should not be assumed to follow the same schedule.

What travelers should do

Drivers, commuters and commercial vehicle operators using the Layton-area roads should allow for the possibility of short waits during blasting operations. Trail users should also check conditions before entering the affected section of the Great Allegheny Passage.

Checking both resources before traveling can help residents distinguish the confirmed Layton-area stoppages from other planned or future work shown on the county construction map.
