Kewaunee County Bridge Closures Could Affect Summer Travel
Bridge replacements on Kewaunee County Highways N and J are creating seasonal closures that may affect Kewaunee-area trips through early fall.
Two Kewaunee County bridge replacement projects are creating seasonal road closures that may affect Kewaunee residents traveling beyond the city for work, farming, appointments, services and recreation.
According to a July 7 notice from the Kewaunee County Highway Department, County Highway N is closed at the bridge between Gasche Road and County Highway V. The county said that closure was expected to continue through the end of summer while the bridge was replaced.
Highway J schedule extends into early fall
The same county notice scheduled a full closure of County Highway J at the bridges between St. Peters Road and County Highway AB. The project involves replacing two bridges, with the closure scheduled to run from mid-July through early fall.
The Highway J project is separate from the Highway N closure, but the timing means drivers using county roads may encounter both restrictions during the same travel period. Because construction schedules can change, travelers should confirm the current status before leaving.
Parallel roads provide alternatives
Door County Daily News reported that parallel roads are available to help motorists get around both closures. The report did not identify those roads as formal signed detours, so drivers should review current roadway signs and check Wisconsin 511 before choosing a route.
Wisconsin 511 provides current information about road closures, construction activity and work-zone conditions. The service can help travelers check whether a closure remains active and whether route information has changed.
Why the projects matter in Kewaunee
Neither bridge closure is inside the City of Kewaunee, but county highways connect residents with jobs, farms, businesses, government services and recreation across the county. The closures may require travelers to change routes or allow additional time, especially for people making repeated trips during the construction period.
The county describes both projects as bridge replacements and advises travelers to plan ahead. Residents should check Wisconsin 511 and follow posted roadway signs before using County Highways N or J. Schedules and route conditions may change as construction progresses.
