Louisville road projects bring lane shifts and possible closures as summer work continues
Louisville drivers should expect changing lane positions and possible delays Friday as work continues on KY 2054 Algonquin Parkway. A separate Kennedy Bridge traffic-control measure could add a three-lane restriction this weekend if earlier work was postponed.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s District 5 Roadshow lists daily and nightly lane closures and delays on Algonquin Parkway between 40th Street and Winkler Avenue. The advisory does not describe the entire corridor as continuously closed, but drivers should prepare for changing work-zone conditions.
Algonquin Parkway lane restrictions
The work zone covers about 3.3 miles of KY 2054, from 40th Street to Winkler Avenue. KYTC identifies the project as a highway safety improvement, resurfacing and roadway-reconfiguration project.
For drivers, nearby residents and businesses, the practical effect is a changing lane layout, slower movement through active work areas and possible delays when turning or reaching properties. Pedestrians and cyclists should follow posted work-zone controls as crews complete sidewalk-ramp and median work.
What the project will change
Algonquin Parkway currently has four travel lanes. The completed design will reduce the roadway to two travel lanes and add a center two-way left-turn lane.
KYTC says the project also includes asphalt milling and paving, new signs and pavement markings, traffic-signal rebuilding, concrete sidewalk ramps and median modifications.
Schedule, contractor and cost
The KYTC project page lists Sept. 1, 2026, as the expected paving completion date and Sept. 30, 2026, as the expected date for all construction activities to finish. The broader District 5 Roadshow describes completion as expected in fall 2026.
A KYTC contract progress estimate dated June 22, 2026, identifies E&B Paving LLC as the contractor. The record says work began May 21, 2026, and lists the contract amount as $2,981,600.35.
Kennedy Bridge restriction includes a contingency
The John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge has a separate traffic-control plan. KYTC says the right two lanes of the bridge and the I-65 South-to-I-64 West ramp were scheduled to be closed from Sunday, Aug. 2, through 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17. The Court Avenue and Sixth Street ramps to I-65 South in Jeffersonville, Indiana, were also listed for closure during that period.
Separately, the right three lanes of the Kennedy Bridge were scheduled for closure from 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, through 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10. KYTC says that three-lane traffic control would instead run from 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, through 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, if inclement weather or another unforeseen circumstance postponed the earlier work.
The Aug. 14-17 right-three-lane restriction should not be treated as newly confirmed unless KYTC activates or confirms it. It is separate from the active Algonquin Parkway project.
Other Louisville road work
KYTC also lists possible daily lane closures on U.S. 60, or Shelbyville Road, between Eastwood Cutoff Road and Rockcrest Way. The widening and improvement project includes realigning Gilliland Road, straightening KY 2861 near the U.S. 60 intersection and adding elements to provide continuity for the Louisville Loop shared-use path. Completion is expected this fall.
Louisville motorists should allow extra time, watch temporary signs and follow posted lane-control instructions. Drivers planning to cross the Kennedy Bridge should check current KYTC updates to determine whether the Aug. 14-17 contingency was activated.
