Manti awards about $3.4 million water-treatment contract

Manti City Council awarded Nelson Brothers Construction an approximately $3.4 million contract on July 15 for a new spring-water treatment plant, moving a major city infrastructure project into construction.

The project is intended to improve treatment of Manti’s spring-water sources in Manti Canyon and strengthen the reliability of the city’s drinking-water system. The award was reported July 23 by the Sanpete Messenger after the council acted on the contractor selection.

What the project will do

The planned facility will use membrane filtration to treat water from Manti’s spring sources. The procurement materials describe an initial treatment capacity of about 1,000 gallons per minute per skid, with design allowance for expansion to about 1,200 gallons per minute per skid and installation of a third skid later.

For residents, the project’s significance is tied to dependable drinking-water treatment and the city’s ability to manage its water system over time. The project documents describe treatment capacity, reliability and future expansion as central purposes. They do not establish that the plant has already improved current water quality because the facility has not been completed.

Seven companies submitted bids

According to the Sanpete Messenger report, seven companies submitted bids for the work. Nelson Brothers Construction was selected as the most qualified bidder, and the city council approved the contract award.

The July 15 council agenda identified the treatment-plant contractor award as a recommendation for council consideration. The subsequent local report confirmed that the award was completed rather than remaining only a recommendation or pending proposal.

What remains unclear

The approved materials do not establish when construction will begin, when the plant will be completed or what the final audited project cost will be. The approximately $3.4 million figure should therefore be understood as the reported contract amount, not necessarily the full cost of every project-related expense.

State drinking-water records show that Manti has pursued assistance and project development related to a new treatment facility, including efforts connected to drinking-water quality requirements. Those records provide background on the project’s history but do not serve as evidence of the July 2026 contract award.

The immediate change for Manti is the selection of a construction contractor. The next useful updates for residents will be the construction schedule, any notices affecting roads or utilities, project milestones and a clearer accounting of total costs as work advances.
